Sales Velocity

Metrics

The rate at which a product sells over a given period, measured in units per day or week. The single largest factor in Amazon Best Seller Rank (BSR) calculation.

Sales velocity is the speed at which a product moves: units sold per unit of time. For Amazon FBA, sales velocity is the single largest input to BSR (Best Seller Rank) — more important than total review count, product age, or price. Amazon's BSR algorithm weights recent velocity over historical velocity. A product selling 50 units/day this week will out-rank a product selling 1,000 units/day six months ago. This is why a well-targeted Amazon ads campaign can lift BSR within days. For product research, sales velocity is the metric to optimize. A niche with 5 listings each selling 20 units/day is more attractive than one with 50 listings each selling 2 units/day — the former has concentrated demand a new entrant can capture.
