BSR
Metrics
Best Seller Rank. Amazon's per-category sales rank, updated hourly. Lower BSR means more sales — a BSR of 1 in a category is the top seller in that category. BSR is marketplace-specific (DE BSR ≠ FR BSR).
BSR, or Best Seller Rank, is a dynamic metric updated hourly that reflects the sales performance of products within specific categories on Amazon. Each marketplace, such as DE, FR, and IT, has its own BSR, meaning a product with a BSR of 1 in Germany may not hold the same rank in France. The calculation of BSR is based on recent sales velocity, with more weight given to the most recent sales, making it a crucial indicator for sellers aiming to optimize their inventory and marketing strategies. Historical BSR data tools allow sellers to analyze trends and estimate monthly sales volume based on rank changes. A lower BSR indicates higher sales, but achieving and maintaining a low BSR can be challenging, especially during peak shopping seasons like Black Friday and Christmas, when competition intensifies. Sellers must also consider that BSR can fluctuate significantly based on promotional activities, stock levels, and pricing strategies. For instance, a temporary price drop can boost sales and improve BSR, but if stock runs out, the rank may drop quickly. Therefore, understanding BSR trends and leveraging tools like the Search Term Report can help sellers make informed decisions to enhance their product visibility and sales performance across EU marketplaces.
Frequently asked
What does BSR mean on Amazon?
BSR means Best Seller Rank. It is Amazon's sales rank for a product within a category, updated hourly. A lower number means more recent sales: BSR 1 is the best-selling product in that category on that marketplace.
What is a good BSR?
There is no single good number, because BSR is relative to the category and the marketplace. A BSR of 20,000 in a large category can mean more daily sales than 2,000 in a small one, and a BSR earned on amazon.de says nothing about amazon.fr. Compare a product only against others in the same category and country.
How is BSR calculated?
From recent sales velocity, weighted toward the most recent sales, and recomputed hourly. It measures units sold relative to other products in the category — not revenue, not reviews and not ratings. That is why a short price promotion can move BSR sharply and why it falls back once the promotion ends.
Does BSR tell you how many units a product sells?
Not directly. BSR is an ordering, not a quantity, so any unit estimate derived from it is a model of the category's sales curve rather than a measurement. Treat a rank-to-sales estimate as an indication of scale, and confirm it against your own settlement data once you are selling.
